WEST.GEN.1Scope and Content
This small thoroughfare, like the rest of the area, became a prime site for brothels by the mid-19th century, and most of its original buildings have been demolished. A fine two-story dwelling at 9 West Street, however, was built before 1830 as an investment by Dr. William Kirkland, the owner of 116 Church Street.
File contains brief history of West Street and 13 West Street from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); newspaper article about 13 West Street (DYKYC 1980); Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report for 19 West Street (2002).
