Scope and Content

Twenty-seven townhouses constructed on a 1.8 acre site acquired by Historic Charleston Foundation ca. 1977 and later developed by Morton Needle. An architectural competition was initiated after HCF acquired the site and the design submitted by the Columbia, SC, firm Heyward and Salmons was selected. The project was delayed because of national economic issues at the time and HCF eventually decided to sell the property with protective covenants in 1985 to a private developer, Morton Needle, who chose to build based on the original design. The infill development is now known as Wraggborough Square. File contains documentation of the covenant restrictions on all Wraggborough Square properties (Title to Real Estate by a Corporation); Homeowner's Association document, "Restrictive Covenants and Easements for Wraggborough Square" which incorporates the covenant restrictions); excerpt from Historic Preservation for a Living City (Weyeneth, 2000) describing the project; newspaper articles; photocopies of plat "Wraggborough Square Phase II" (1983) (one copy annotated); Sanborn Maps (1888, 1902, 1944, 1951, 1955).
