Description

Two B&W Polaroid photographs of the Sears parking lot on the site of the Charleston Orphan House and Orphan House Chapel had been located. a: View across the Sears parking lot from the Vanderhorst Street entrance. Sign projects from the entrance post, "For Sears Customers Only. Lot Open During Store Hours." Captioned on back "[top of caption cut off] ...to park 5 more cars by Sears Roebuck. Gabriel Manigault. Classified as one of the 26 bldgs of national significance in the city." b: View of the parking lot from across the street. South side of St. Matthews Lutheran Church and rear of the Francis Marion Hotel in background. Photo partially damaged, obscuring portions of the photo. Captioned on back "On this spot stood the Orphans' Chapel, Gabriel Manigault, Architect. One of Charleston's 26 buildings of "National Importance. Destroyed in 1953 by Sears Roebuck to park 5 more cars." Both dated 1961.
