Built ca. 1805, in St. James Santee Parish, Charleston County. John Collins received a grant for the Tibwin property in 1705 and it remained in the Collins family until purchased by William Matthews in 1794. Matthews is thought to have built the house, originally a story-and-a-half cottage, in 1805. In 1822, a hurricane caused great destruction in the Santee Delta and it was reported that the storm destroyed Matthews's dwellings, outhouses, and crops; however, the house was probably not a complete loss as tradition and the evidence suggest that it was moved back from the water's edge and rebuilt at its present location. At the turn of the century, a second story was added, giving the house a new double portico facade. The first floor still contains the original woodwork. An early rice mill located on the property was purchased by henry Ford during the Great Depression and is now on display at his museum in Dearborn, Michigan. (Source: Plantations of the Lowcountry.)
