Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1746-72. Long thought to have been built by the cabinetmaker Jonathan Badger after his acquisition of the lot in 1746, this substantial brick double tenement may constitute one of the best-preserved exposed-brick buildings in the city from the first quarter of the 18th century. Flemish bond brickwork with brick jack arches and a pantile roof accentuate this building's early character, but interior detailing indicated 1770s rebuilding or alterations. Following the early Charleston single house plan, a door (Greek Revival) stands within the center street opening at 41 Tradd Street. The entire property was sold to the tailor Alexander Cormack in 1700. Recently a brick incised with the date "1772" has been discovered on the exterior. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains FOHG house histories (ca. 1980, 1988, 2007); FOHG garden history (2007); biographical information on Jonathan Badger (unattributed); newspaper article (Mercury, 2015); photocopy of architectural drawings for 41 Tradd Street (existing elevations and floor plans) presumably submitted in support of BAR (2008) (approval status not indicated).
