LIMEHOUSE.003-5.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1885; W.F. Carter, builder. These are two of five houses S.J.L. Matthews contracted with W.F. Carter, a builder from Savannah, to build in 1885. Carter had come to Charleston as the contractor for the New Brighton Hotel on Sullivan's Island and remained in the city. The other three houses are 155, 157 and 159 Tradd Street. All are 2½ stories of wood and have distinctive piazza entrance hoods. (City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual.) S.J.L. Matthews resided at 3 Limehouse Street.
