KING.573.1Scope and Content
The corner of King and Cannon Streets is Lot 17 of the lands of Rowland Rugeley created in a plat of 1804. Rugeley owned a very large piece of land along St. Philips Street-six complete city blocks, from Morris Street to Bogard Street-when he died. In 1806, an auction was held to sell off the remainder of the Rugeley lands, and John Joachim Bulow was the high bidder for five lots, including Lot 17. By 1831, Bulow was living at a large house at the corner of King and Cannon. Deeds describe the house as three-story brick with a two-story brick kitchen, and outbuildings in the rear. The house later served commercial and rental uses until it was demolished in 1951 for the construction of Altman's Furniture which closed in 2006. It currently is home to Affordabike on the first floor and a suite of offices on the second floor.
