VANDRHRST.044.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1863. A Charleston merchant built what may be one of the only houses constructed during the Civil War. Aaron Loryea acquired the lot, carved out of a property to the west, from Robert Mallar. A tall gable roof with tripartite window in its front end and three large pedimented dormers shelters the dwelling and piazza below. Fine wood detailing, including a wide frieze band; a Tuscan-columned piazza with elaborately tuned balusters; and a rectilinear piazza screen with large glass transom and sidelights seem the hallmarks of this wartime construction. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains graduate student report (Rucha Kamath, 2017) on the history of the building/property, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, plats, and other supporting documentation; Hurricane Hugo damage survey.Collection
