Interview of Frances Edmunds by Christopher Phillips, then the Architecture and Historic Homes editor at Architectural Digest, in advance of Mr. Phillips writing an article about the Nathaniel Russell House. Most of the interview takes place in the Russell House, then in a car as they drive around downtown streets.
The interview begins with some commentary about Charleston prompted by Mr. Phillips' questions. Mrs. Edmunds then takes Mr. Phillips through the Russell House during which she describes the house, its social history, and its furnishings. (There are house tours occurring simultaneously and can be heard in the background.) After the Russell House, they drive around some downtown streets during which Mrs. Edmunds describes some of the streets and buildings. When the interview concludes, Mr. Phillips recaps the conversation and shares his thoughts about meeting with Frances and his impressions of Charleston. Note that the recording stops and restarts several times throughout.
Mr. Phillips was in Kiawah Island to accept an award from the SC AIA.
Original interview on cassette tape, filed with CD. Digitized and available as MP3 or on CD.
