CLEVELAND.023.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1915. On October 23, 1888, John L. Macauley of New York City purchased about eight acres of undeveloped, suburban property on the Charleston Neck which had belonged to Tucker North and his descendants throughout most of the 19th century. The land spanned King Street to Rutledge Avenue and would eventually include Francis Street, Cleveland Street, and Maverick Street. On April 10, 1893, Macauley hired a real estate broker to market and sell off the land, and on April 14, 1893, a plat was filed showing over 100 lots, one of which was Lot 53, the eventual location of 23 Cleveland Street, an American foursquare, two-story house with a one-story front porch.
