Donor stated that the photo was probably taken in the 1890s when the house was radically altered from its early 19th century appearance. Note included with photo: "Modern adaptation of the "Gallery." Great open-air sitting-rooms screened from the street and connected by narrower galleries. (South Carolina Hall, birthplace of Secession, in the rear to the left.)"
