SMITH.048.1Scope and Content
Constructed early 1800s, 48 Smith Street is a 2½ story wood framed building with a gabled roof and a piazza dating to the 1840s-1860s. The Charleston single house has two rooms per floor and a central north-south hallway. A seven-foot brick masonry English basement forms the base of the house. Brick masonry dependencies and a mid-20th century frame structure are in the rear of the house. Wealthy SC planters were the first owners including William Doughty, who may have built the house, Andrew Hasell, James Cuthbert, and Thomas Boston Clarkson. Other residents include Dr. William Mosely Fitch and Henry Siegling, owner of the successful Siegling Music House on King Street, and Dr. Josiah E. Smith in 1935, who responsible for renovating the house, carriage house, servants' house, adding a new frame structure in the rear of the building, and converting the property into eight apartments. In 1970, the Preservation Society of Charleston gave the property a Carolopolis award. Unfortunately, much of the historic main house was destroyed by a devastating fire on June 14, 2017. Efforts are currently (2019) underway to preserve the facade. (Defenbaugh report.)
File contains property history report which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, letters, newspaper articles/advertisements, photos, and other supporting documentation (Kayleigh Defenbaugh, HCF Intern, 2019); newspaper article (1937), City Ward book research notes.
