Further researchScope and Content
Robert Henderson, a planter from Berkeley County, likely built the double tenement (29 and 31 State Street) in 1797. A previous building had been added before the American Revolution when the land was owed by John Remington, but that house seems to have been burned during the Fire of June 1796 that destroyed the neighborhood. With only one short period in the mid-19th century, the building has served as a rental property for its entire existence, often for several families at once. Parts of the building have been used for commercial purposes too.
