Scope and Content

Designed by Albert Simons, the Henry P. Archer School was built in 1934, and then expanded almost immediately in 1936 to add classroom and auditorium spaces, and again expanded in 1961 adding a much-needed cafeteria and covered walkways. Over the years the facility provided both an educational and a meeting place for the immediate neighborhood. Following its official closure in 1980 it became a temporary relocation facility for various schools (and other school-related functions) during renovation and new construction of those facilities. (Condition Assessment.) File contains adaptive re-use "Existing Facilities Preliminary Condition Assessment" (2018); newspaper articles (including DYKYC 1937); brief excerpt from thesis (Blevins, 2001); Sanborn Maps (1944, 1951, 1955); photocopy of architectural drawings.
