Description

American Empire caned sofa 1835/1840 Mahogany and mahogany veneer In the transnational Victorian style having molded crest rail continuing into shaped arms ending in 'S'-scroll supports; caned back, sides and seat, on shaped and molded apron on front scroll feet and tapered rear feet. One of three of the caned sofas in the Aiken-Rhett house. There were probably a total of four matching sofas. This sofa and its mates were purchased by Governor William Aiken and his wife, Harriet Lowndes Aiken for use in their home at 48 Elizabeth St in Charleston, SC. There were probably a total of four matching sofas. The sofa has descended directly through the family to the current owner.
