Description

Mid 20th century Flat Rock provides a rare view into the affluent, antebellum period of the South, having been created during the peak of life in old Charleston. The symbols of this period were transferred to Flat Rock, a summer settlement of the prominent plantation owners of Charleston and the lowcountry, represented by the style of architecture and the still-continuing way of life of the old families. Includes historical sketch of Flat Rock, with photographs and descriptions of the following: Mountain Lodge, Diamond in the Desert, Many Pines, Saluda Cottages, Argyle, Beaumont, Pleasant Hill, Piedmont, Connemara (fka Rock Hill), Tall Trees (fka Greenlawn), Brooklands, Kenmure (fka Glenroy), Rutledge Cottage, Woodfields Inn (fka Farmers Hotel), Little Hill, Dunroy, Ravenswood, Church St. John-in-the-Wilderness, The Rhett House, Teneriffe, The Elliott Place, Enchantment, Tranquility, Sherwood, and the Flat Rock Post Office. Unpaged : chiefly ill. ; 24 cm.
