One of a pair of Interior Doors, Mahogany, from the Judge Mitchell King House, Charleston, SC circa 1806. Each having six molded and triple string inlaid panels.
The doors originated in the Charleston, SC house built by Thomas Radcliffe in 1806 at the corner of George and Meeting Streets. Upon Thomas Radcliffe's death, the house was bequeathed to his wife who sold it to Judge Mitchell King in 1824. Subsequently the house was known as the Judge Mitchell King House, and existed on the site until it was razed by the College of Charleston to build a museum. Before its demolition, interior elements were removed including these doors which were part of a numbered series. The doors were purchased by the donor's grandfather and the remaining doors in the series are now in the upstairs drawing room of the Dock Street Theatre, located at 135 Church Street, Charleston, SC. The door's interior recess is pictured in "The Dwelling Houses of Charleston, SC" by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith and DE Huger Smith, facsimile edition of the 1917 edition by Diadem Books, pg. 131-133. The doors descended to the donors through Louis Edward Deneaux.Collection
