First published in 1898, when the author was 70, this republication describes scenes of plantation life, travels abroad, the trials of the Confederate War, with an especially vivid account of the burning of Columbia, and the desperate circumstances during the War's aftermath, which led Dr. Porter to the forming of his school, the Porter Academy, now Porter-Gaud School.
