For description purposes, the table is oriented with the large scratch in the upper left quadrant of the top. (A diagram is in the file.)
Overall, the top has signs of wear around all four sides along the edges. The corners have all lost their sharpness due to age and wear. The surface of the top has a relatively new large scratch in the upper left quadrant which was present when the table arrived from the Museum. There is old carving in the lower left, which appears to be initials or a zigzag pattern. There is an old horizontal scratch near the middle. Small remants of red paint can be seen randomly over the top. There is a ring burn, approximately 1" in diameter, on the right middle. There is an area of old abrasion near the burn.
FRAME: wear along the bottom edges.
LEGS: front right - top ring worn flat on outer edge and chipped on inner. Evidence of red pain on inside surface.

back right: vertical crack; evidence of red paint around rings; outer corner edge worn at bottom.

Vol. I, p. 31: Rectangular double-board top resting on turned double baluster legs, supported by heavy flush beaded frame and stretchers. The frame and stretchers are both joined by double pegged mortise and tenon joints. There are no glue blocks or battens suggesting a French technical influence which is supported stylistically by the double baluster-turned legs. While tables of this form were not new to the period, certain refinements place it later than its more basic counterparts. These characteristics include the heavy flush bead on the frame and stretchers, less overhang on the top, and the stretchers being taller than they are wide.Created By
