Mahogany sabre-leg chair with upholstered seat cushions. Metal lyre decoration attached to chair rail. Empire style.
A new form, inspired by French designs, introduced during the late Empire period, this gondole chair features an open wooden back with a curved tablet crest rail on a vase-shaped splat. The stiles are curved forward to rest on the seat rail. The front legs are scrolled, the rear legs splayed. The crest rail is embellished with an applied metal lyre decoration, but the main visual impact is achieved by the highly figured mahogany veneer. During this period the invention of the steam-driven band say allowed the cutting of intricate curves for almost any thickness of wood, marking the beginning of mass-produced furniture.
