Support: The support had a lot of surface dirt. The paper was oxidized, brittle, and discolored from aging. There were small patches on the verso, and one large piece of stationary, and these had protected the paper against oxidation. the glue used to repair the print had darkened and stained the paper. Insects had grazed across the front and eaten some holes through the bottom center. There were water stains around some patches. The stationary was patching one very large tear in the cneter right protion. Medium:; The watercolor had been damaged by exposure to light. The colors were slightly sensitive in water, especially the red-orange and the white.

Overall Condition

Poor

Scope of work: TREATMENT Cleaning/Washing/Buffering The surfaces were drycleaned with sponge erasers. The heavily painted colors were fixed with Acryloid B-72 in toluene. The paper was washed in alkaline tap water to remove acids and stains. This loosened the paper patches on the verso and removed some of the brownish discoloration of the glue. the paper was aqueously buffered with a solution of diluted saturated calcium hydroxide water. Upon drying, calcium carbonate is formed in the paper fibers to buffer against future acid formation. this increases the life of the paper. Stains in the sky and on the verso were bleached under flourescent lights using 3% hydrogen peroxide in a tap water bath for 30 hours. The front was bleached for approximately 20 hours. The paper was then rebuffered. Cosmetic/Repairs/Backing Tears were repaired with Japanese paper and cooked wheat starch adhesive. Losses were inserted with rag Western Paper. The paper was given two reinforcing backing of Japanes paper/starch paste, and stretch-dried to flatten it. The losses were inpainted using watercolors and sky stains were reduced and blended with paste. FINAL PRESENTATION: The paper will be returned to the owner for conservation framing. Photographs: Before , during and after treatment digital pictures were taken. Cost: 1500 Expected completion date: 2006-04-11
