Nineteen photographs of scenes at various wharves and piers on the Charleston waterfront in the 1920s. Identifications made by donor.
a: Aerial photograph of the Charleston Harbor. Titled: "An Airplane view of the Charleston Harbor." Captioned on back: "The terminals of the Clyde Steamship company, Baltimore and Carolina steamship Company, southern Railway, Seaboard Air Line Railway, the Charleston dry dock and others are shown." Photograph by Eaton-Ison(?) Co. Measures 7.25" x 10".
b: View at Union Pier. Man standing by piece of machinery on the pier. Captioned: "Union Pier, July 8, 1938." Measures 5" x 7".
c: View look east from the river showing South Adgers Wharf buildings. Sign advertising "H. Oberman and Bro. -- 444 King Street -- Furniture-Household Goods" on east elevation of building. Measures 5" x 7".
d: Captioned "U.S. Army Terminals." The Base was located at the foot of Remount Road. Measures 5" x 7".
e: Captioned "Locomotive Shed, Oct. 1, 1925." Features a view looking south; note the smokestacks in the background, likely those located near Charlotte Street. Measures 5" x 7"
f: Aerial photograph of the U.S. Army Terminals. Measures 4.75" x 7".
g: Captioned "S.S. Toluma [sic] at Army Base Terminals, Sept. 28, 1920." Measures 5" x 7". See also Photo O.
h-i: Two photos of models of the U.S. Army Terminals. See Photo F. Both measure 5" x 7".
j: Wharf-related building that had been located next to the U.S. Customs House, across Concord Street between North and South Market Streets. (The Customs House is located at the SE corner of East Bay Street and Market Streets.) It was likely the Union Pier Carpenter Shop. The granite post and gate remain on the site today. Stamped on back "Received June 13, 1924, Port Utilities Commission." Measures 5" x 7".
k: Railway depot (?) at an unidentified location, likely near a waterfront pier. Railroad tracks in front of building.
l: Ruins of a building associated with the ports and/or railway. Note the buildings in the distance and background for possible location identification. Man sits atop an upturned canoe at left. Dated on back March 19, 1928. Measures 3.5" X 5.5".
m: Captioned "Port Utilities Commission Locomotive No. 1, April 1, 1925." Train stopped on the site; railroad tracks in the foreground. Measures 5" x 7".
n: Model replica of the Clyde Line Steamship Co. site. Photograph by J.H. Garety. Measures 9.5" x 6"; 7" x 4.5" copy also in sleeve.
