Description

Framed engraving and invitation behind glass in a wood frame. Invitation 1818; Engraving : 1862; Engraving on paper of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Portrait of a military man in an interior setting, standing in front of a table, his rt. hand is behind him, his left hand is tucked into his waiscoat. His military hat is on the table. Seen in an exterior setting are three men, two in uniform, with their backs to the viewer. Written on the Engraving: C.C. Pinckney From the original painting by Chappel on the possession of the publisher Johnson. Fry & Co. Publisher. New York Entered according to act of Congress A.D. 1862 by Johnson .Fry & Co. in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the m------------- Invitation is slipped under the etching: Charleston, June 23:1818 Sir, You are requested to attend a Monthly( crossed out) Special Meeting of the Managers of the Charleston Bible Society, at Nol 118 East Bay (on Monday next, (crossed out)) at 11 --------0'clock tomorrow. Severe foxing on mat, engraving and on invitation; paper is yellowed, print is faded from moisture and/ or light; appearance of mat burn; Engraving has diffuse stains and is water marked. Wooden backing board: needs new mounting, tears around entire edge, nails are protuding through paper
