Mahogany sabre-leg chair with upholstered seat cushions. Metal lyre decoration attached to chair rail. Empire style.
A new form introduced during the late Empire period, this gondole chair features an open wooden back with a curved tablet splat on a base-shaped splat. The stiles are curved forward to rest on the seat rail. The front legs are scrolled, the rear legs splayed. Typical of the period, the chair relies on its dark, exotically figured mahogany for visual impact. The crest rail is embellished with a metal lyre. The front seat rail is bowed and accommodates a slip seat which tapers toward the back.
Underside of seat cushion is marked "505/53"Collection
