Pair of Card Tables, circa 1825, New York, New York, attributed to Deming and Bulkley (American, 1818 - circa 1840). Mahogany with giltwood and antique brass inlay. Gift of an anonymous donor.
This rare pair of game tables is attributed to the New York firm Deming and Bulkley. Founded by two cousins, Brazilia Deming (1781-1854) and Erastus Bulkley (1798-1872), the firm dominated the high-end Charleston furniture market from 1820 through to the 1840s, operating a retail store on King Street. First entering the Charleston market in 1820 by raffling a suite of their drawing room furniture, they sought to compete with European imported furniture that up to that point had supplied much of the demand of Charleston's elite. Their work, with its elaborate carving, imported hardwood veneer and gilding, was very popular among Charleston's elite for about twenty years, until the waning of their popularity led to the partnership being dissolved. Erastus Bulkley would form a partnership with German émigré Gustav Herter in 1852, continuing a tradition of high quality of craftsmanship.Collection
