Sofa, American, probably New York, circa 1830, mahogany veneer, having half-rolled crest rail, scroll handles on arms continuing into scroll leg on casters, having caned back and seat, fitted with one long back cushion and one long seat cushions; one of three of the caned sofas in the Aiken-Rhett house.
This sofa and its mates were purchased by Governor William Aiken and his wife, Harriet Lowndes Aiken for use in their home at 48 Elizabeth St in Charleston, SC. There were probably a total of four matching sofas. The sofa has descended directly through the family to the current owner.Collection
