This watercolor portrait of Arthur Middleton, husband of Alicia Hopton Russell Middleton and son-in-law to Nathaniel Russell, was painted by his brother, Thomas Middleton. Arthur Middleton is said to be 40 years of age in this portrait.
Arthur Middleton (1785-1837) was the son of Colonel Thomas Middleton and Ann Middleton. While the owner of Stono Plantation, Arthur and Alicia spent the beginning years of the marriage residing at the Russell Family home on Meeting St. In 1811, they welcome their first of four children. By 1819, the Middletons had settled into a seasonal town-and-country rhytmn sharing the summers with family in downtown Charleston. Arthur Middleton passsed away in 1837 at the age of 52.
The portrait was included in the private publication of Alicia Hopton Middleton's book "Life in Carolina and New England during the Nineteenth Century: As Illustrated by Reminiscences and Letters of the Middleton Family of Charleston, South Carolina and of the DeWolff family of Bristol, Rhode Island" in 1929. Alicia Hopton Middleton was the granddaughter of Arthur Middleton and his portrait is one of 50 included in her book.
