Description

In 1800, South Carolina was home to more Jews than any other place in North America. As old as the province of Carolina itself, the Jewish presence has been a vital but little-examined element in the growth of South Carolina's cities and towns, in the economy of slavery and post-slavery society, and in the creation of American Jewish religious identity. In conjunction with the exhibit of the same name, the book presents a remarkable group of objects and a provocative investigation of the people and circumstances that produced them. Contents include: The Americanization of an Old-Time Religion by Deborah Dash Moore -- The Eastern European Jewish Experience in South Carolina by Jenna Weissman Joselit -- Just Like One of Us by Jack Bass -- A Call for Candlesticks by Dale Rosengarten -- Narrative of the Exhibition: First Families, This Happy Land, The Lost Cause, Little Jerusalem, Pledging Allegiance, Of Blessed Memory, Palmetto Jews. Also contains a catalogue of exhibition items, contributors' biographies, and glossary. xviii, 268 p. : ill. ; 28 cm.
