Built in 1809, now the museum headquarters of Historic Charleston Foundation, it is furnished much as it might have been when the home of the Russell family. The unknown architect of this house delighted in elliptical curves. He has spiraled these free-standing stairs i a squared hall the better to emphasize the curve. This fine mansion built by Nathaniel Russell, then one of the leading merchants of Charleston is said to have cost him $80,000, a vast amount for the place and the time.
