Coffee Grinder

Description

Coffee grinder with brass cylinder for grinding Turkish style coffee. Made by a German manufacturer. Fancy engraving with scallop pattern. The grinder comes apart - receptacle, remove cap to put beans in hopper, removeable handle. Engraved on bottom is word "MOKKA" surrounded by "ORIGINAL - DIENES - PE DE". Manufacturer: Peter Dienes (PE DE), Germany. Turkish coffee mills with cylindrical brass and iron parts appeared in the 1400s. Perhaps a century later, as Arab traders began to sell coffee in neighboring countries, the earliest spice and coffee grinding devices came to Europe. (Antique Coffee Grinders, White & Sivonda, 2001) Peter Dienes founded his PeDe company in Remscheid, Germany in 1869, and it was taken over by his sons after his death in 1899. PeDe closed its doors in 1962.
