Coffee Mill

Description

Enterprise No. 2 red cast iron coffee mill. The wheels on both sides are each 8 3/4" diameter. Inside wheel is the number #2007, and the number #2006 on the drive wheel with the handle. The front of mill has seal of two gold coins; the left has a seated female in Grecian apparel. The right coin states "National Exhibit" across the top. Center of right coin states "Award --------- United States Patent Pending" and a date in Roman Numerals - date not clear - perhaps 1877. There is a porcelain handle on the drawer. Manufacturer: Enterprise MFG. Co. Philadelphia, PA. after 1877. The Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia, PA was founded in 1866. John Gullick Baker joined the company in 1869. His 1870 and 1873 patents were the foundation of Enterprise's prolific coffee grinder business for the next half century. (Antique Coffee Grinders, White & Sivonda, 2001)
