Description

Pipe is made of wood with a bowl that is brown in color, in the shape of a gun that turns into a black stem. Angelo Spiris obtained for John Dawson while on a tour of France. Donor's Description: Given to John [Dawson] by Angelo Spiris. Obtained for John while on a tour of France. John Dawson, son of Bob Dawson, and mother's name was "Butler" whose farm became a greater part of the first ward. The creek that flows south and empties into the Thornapple River by the old "Table Factory", now the Hastings Mfg. Co. Warehouse, derives its name from the Butler farm. John lived in Hastings most of his life. Received his education in Hastings. Served his apprenticeship in the Holloway Drug Store. Became a registered pharmacist. He became Postmaster of the Hastings Post Office. Was a Director of the National Bank of Hastings, was secretary of the Barry County Fair, a Director of the Hastings Mutual Windstorm Co., was co-partner of Miller & Dawson Furniture Store. An ardent Democrat and organizer of "The Stove League", headquarters in the back of the furniture store, whose activities adjourned for the season at the first showing of the dandelion blossom or any signs of any member having "Spring Fever".
