Context

This pie dish was made by the well-known ceramics company, Wedgwood. Established by Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795), in Staffordshire, England in 1759, the Wedgwood business has been in operation for over 250 years. While the company is best known for its "Wedgwood Blue" jasperware featuring classical white motifs, this pie dish is made of caneware. Fired with no exterior glaze, caneware is a type of stoneware known for its beige, or "buff," coloring. It was first produced by Wedgwood in the 1770s.
