Context

Eight-year-old Jane M. Murchison (1818-1828) completed this sampler on June 14, 1826. While samplers were often made by school-age girls studying at academies, it is not believed that Jane attended such a school. Therefore, she most likely created this piece at home. Samplers provided a medium for girls to show their handiwork and were often signed and dated in thread by the maker. Based on the information left in stitches by Jane, she was born in 1818. She would pass away only two years after producing this sampler in her hometown of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Jane was survived by her younger sister and her mother, Eliza Campbell Jones Murchison (1793-1878), who completed a quilt now held in Historic Columbia's permanent collection (HCF 1970.258.1).
