Context

Originally owned by Mary Cantey Hampton (1779-1863) as indicated on the cover and an interior page, this "Book of Common Prayer" was published in New York by the Bible & Common Prayer Book Society in 1844. It was later given by her grandson, Wade Hampton Manning (1845-1911), to his daughter, Susan Frances Hampton Manning (1884-1966) in 1899, 36 years after Mary Cantey's death. Susan, who later married Legare Walker Inglesby (1878-1935), was named after Wade Manning's mother and Mary Cantey's daughter, Susan Frances Hampton Manning (1816-1845), wife of governor John Laurence Manning (1816-1889). A "Book of Common Prayer" is used within the Anglican Communion and involves various types of worship services and prayers to be used throughout the year. Saved within this copy are various clippings of obituary notices of Hampton, Preston, and Manning descendants.
