Context

Known today as L. T. Piver, the Parisian perfume company was founded in 1774 by Michel Adam. Originally called Á la Reine des Fleurs, the shop featured scented gloves and a specialty stain remover that garnered the patronage of Louis XVI (1754–1793) and his court. A generation later Adam’s successors, Pierre Guillaume Dissey (d. 1823) and Louis-Toussaint Piver (1787–1877), began to market their prestigious business outside of France, and by the end of the 1800s, L. T. Piver was known as the “perfumer of the world.” By the early 1900s, Wingfield’s Drug Store was one of the perfumer’s many retailers. Operating on Main Street in Columbia from 1899 to 1949, the pharmacy was often frequented by Chicora College students eager to buy banana splits and cosmetics.
