Class ring for Chicora College for Women's graduating class of 1924.Context
This ring belonged to Addie "Marie" Boland (1903-1998) of Springfield, South Carolina. She graduated from Chicora College in 1924 with a bachelor's degree in education. She would later teach in Greenville and then Florence before marrying Herbert Allie "Hub" Timmons (1899-1997) in 1932. They moved to Columbia in 1942.
Established at the former home of the Hampton-Preston family, the Presbyterian College for Women educated women in a variety of disciplines beginning in 1890. In 1915, the school merged with Greenville’s Chicora College. Chicora College subsequently operated in the Hampton-Preston Mansion and surrounding grounds for almost 15 years before it merged with Queens College in Charlotte.
According to the 1924 "Nods & Becks" yearbook, Marie was a part of many student organizations and was the "Class Cheer Leader" for the 1923-1924 school year. In that same yearbook, Sylvan Brothers, the local maker of this class ring, was the first advertisement posted. By that time, its owners, Swedish immigrant brothers Gustav and Johannes Sylvan, had been in business at 1500 Main Street, its present location, for nearly 20 years.Made/Created
