Set of six metal spice containers within a metal box with handle and latch.

Context

Spices were once rare and valuable commodities used in cooking and medicine, primarily harvested by enslaved laborers and imported from plantations in Asia and Northeast Africa. Spice containers typically held a limited selection of spices in small, tightly sealed jars to preserve freshness. As more spices became widely available, the need for larger storage solutions grew, leading to the development of spice racks and shelves. This, in turn, created more efficient kitchen spaces and contributed to the growth of diverse cuisines.
