The top of the postcard reads, "C–98 AIRPLANE VIEW OF FORT JACKSON, SOUTH CAROLINA, NEAR COLUMBIA." The bottom righthand notes, "E–4599." The back of the postcard includes includes a note acknowledging the publisher: "PUBLISHED BY ASHEVILLE POST CARD CO., ASHEVILLE, N.C." The postcard contains no written message and was never mailed.

Context

Named after the seventh president of the United States, Camp Jackson was founded in 1917 as the US entered World War I. In 1940, military leaders re-established the site as a permanent base and changed the name to Fort Jackson. Today, the army installation is the largest and most active entry training center in the United States. Encompassing over 52,000 acres of land and more than 1,000 buildings, the fort attracts an estimated 45,000 trainees each year.
