Green hobbleskirt style Coca-Cola bottle. The sides of the bottle are embossed "Coca-Cola / Trademark Registered / In U.S. Patent Office" above "56–98" on one side and "Coca-Cola / Trademark Registered / Min. Contents 6½ FL. OZS" on the other. On the bottom it notes: "Columbia / L / SC."Context
From 1952 to 1992, Columbia's Cottontown neighborhood was home to a Coca-Cola Bottling Company plant located at 2830 North Main Street. This facility was one of several across South Carolina, alongside plants in Greenville, Aiken, Dillon, and Rock Hill.
This style of Coca-Cola bottle is known as a "hobbleskirt" bottle, named for its nipped-in, curvaceous shape that resembles the hobble skirt dresses popular in the early 1900s. The embossed numbers on the bottle indicate its manufacturing date, 1956, and the mold used, 98. Coca-Cola ceased this dating practice in the 1980s. Additionally, the embossed "L" on the bottom indicates that the bottle was made by Latchford Glass Company, based in Los Angeles, California.Made/Created
