Pair of brown leather boots with tan laces. An inscription on the sole of the right shoe reads: "Tess and Ted, School Shoes."Context
The Roberts, Johnson, and Rand Shoe Company of St. Louis, Missouri, created the characters Tess and Ted, also known as the Star Brand Kids, to advertise children's shoes in the early 1900s. While the business—incorporated in 1898—was the largest single shoe manufacturer in the nation, it would grow further by merging with another St. Louis shoe manufacturer, the International Shoe Company, to become the Roberts, Johnson, and Rand-International Shoe Company in 1911.
The business that operated out of a group of five brick buildings on the corner of Mississippi Avenue and Hickory Street—first built in 1903—remains today and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.Made/Created
