Two side chairs with arched crown rail and figured veneer. There is a slight cabriole to the front of the legs and the arms are slightly corned with scroll terminals and shaped supports. The seat and button backs are upholstered with blue floral pattern and stripes.Context
Middle- and upper-class homes during the Victorian era owned a parlor set comprised of specific pieces of furniture, including various types of chairs and a sofa, that was purchased for entertaining guests in the public space of a home. This set of chairs are part of a four-piece rosewood set and features simple lines rather than the intricate, carved detailing from decades prior. The Simons family likely purchased it in the 1890s from one of the many retail furniture stores in Columbia for use in the Mann-Simons family home at 1403 Richland Street. In keeping with the gender-specific use of parlor set pieces, these chairs would have been used by the ladies of the household.Furniture Details
