Andirons

Name/Title

Andirons

Entry/Object ID

2006.5.0130 A-B

Description

A pair of brass andirons with semi-circle curved fronts. The upper set of the curved fronts contain a circular adornment. Both sets of curved fronts are attached with a bolt, allowing them to swivel for more compact storage.

Use

Andirons, also called fire dogs, support wooden logs as they burn in a fireplace. In elevating the logs off the ground, andirons allow air to flow under the logs and create a better fire with less smoke. The vertical key-shaped standards in the front prevent burning logs from rolling off the fire and into the room.
