Context

The M1849 Colt revolver was a favorite sidearm for both Union and Confederate officers during the Civil War because of its small size and light weight. Easily concealed under clothing or in a saddlebag, it was also popular with the Red Shirts and other paramilitary groups active during Reconstruction.
