Toy Wagon

Entry/Object ID

Description

White, wooden toy wagon with four red wheels and a beige string. A faded logo resembling the profile an elephant is on one side of the wagon.

Use

While toy wagons could be used by children for whatever their imagination allowed, wooden pull wagons such as this were commonly sold containing another toy: wooden blocks. The earliest mention of the use of toy blocks of various shapes was in the early 1800s, yet alphabet blocks predate this style of toy. Alphabet blocks originally gained popularity after philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) noted the value of combining learning with play. Wooden wagons could hold these blocks and also allow for children to gain hand-eye coordination while maneuvering the wagon behind them.
