Written by American teacher George Albert Wentworth (1835–1906) and published by Ginn and Company, “Plane Geometry” is a textbook designed to teach students how to prove theorems and solve mathematical problems. Originally published in 1888, the revised edition, shown here, was published in 1899 and utilized by students throughout the United States for decades.
Among them was Jeanette Croxton (1900–1996) who used this book while attending Chicora College at the Hampton-Preston Mansion around 1919. In 1932, she married John Willis Massey (1891–1936), and together the couple had one daughter, Joan (b. 1933), before John’s untimely death. Jeanette lived most of her life in Kershaw County and worked as a seamstress at Superior Cleaners and a salesclerk at Belk Department Store. In 1996, Jeanette was buried in the cemetery behind Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church where she had been a lifelong member.Inscription/Signature/Marks
