Context

Born in Charleston, Robert Mills (1781-1855) was a well-known author, engineer, and architect. His skill in architecture grew under the tutelage of James Hoban (1755-1831), designer of the White House, and Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). Beginning his career in Philadelphia, Mills later returned to South Carolina, where he designed nearly 30 buildings between 1820 and 1827. Locally, these included the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum's first building (present-day Mills Building, 1822) and a home for Ainsley Hall (present-day Robert Mills House, 1823). He also completed this survey, an overview of South Carolina's history, topography, and economy. Mills later returned to Washington D.C. to complete several buildings and monuments, including the Washington Monument on the National Mall.
