Description

Gray bus token. There are four narrow slits surround the center of the token. The obverse reads "S.C. Electric & Gas Co." and the reverse reads "Good for One Fare."

Context

From 1937 until 2002, the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company operated bus service for the greater Columbia metropolitan area. This token was good for one bus fare in the mid-twentieth century. When disbanded, SCE&G's bus service was the last mass transit system owned and operated by a local private utility company in the United States.
