Jeanette Croxton (1900–1996) of Kershaw County used this composition book while learning French at Chicora College around 1919. She ultimately left school early and spent the next few decades working at Superior Cleaners and Belk Department Store. In 1932, she married John Willis Massey (1891–1936), and together the couple had one daughter, Joan (b. 1933), before John’s untimely death. Sixty-three years later, Jeanette was buried in the cemetery behind Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church where she had been a lifelong member.
