Greeting card. One side of the card reads, "May merry joys attend your Christmastide," while the opposite side reads, "With best wishes for a happy New Year." Both sides have illustrations of cherubs in the process of cooking and baking in a kitchen. There is white fringe around the edges of the card.Context
Although it now shows evidence of age, the fringe on the card’s edges—popular during the late Victorian era—was once lavish. Both sides of the card feature neoclassical style images of cherubs preparing a meal, with the front depicting a dead bird on the floor next to a cherub plucking feathers from another fowl. Although often seen as morbid today, depictions of dead birds were quite common on Christmas cards mass-produced during the Victorian era and in the years immediately after, as they represented the preparation of the Christmas feast.Publication Details
